ABOUT

About Pilates

Pilates is a mindful movement practice created by Joseph Hubertus Pilates in the early 1900s.  Joseph, who was born in Germany, suffered from childhood asthma and rickets, and spent his life working to overcome his poor health by embracing many different sports including skiing, diving, gymnastics, yoga and boxing.

Joseph initially started by developing a series of mat exercises that would improve core strength and increase body control. During World War I he was held in an internment camp in England and went on to devise a range of exercise equipment using rigged springs on hospital beds that could be used to rehabilitate patients while lying on their backs in bed.

Joseph Pilates' original method was called Contrology, a system of more than 500 exercises that emphasised the co-ordination between body, mind and spirit.  Pilates believed that physical fitness was the first requisite of happiness.

Joseph emigrated to America in 1923 and together with his wife, Clara, (a nurse who he met on the boat over to America) started a studio in Eighth Avenue, New York, where they worked primarily with dancers, including George Balanchine and Martha Graham.

Joseph and Clara Pilates trained several teachers who in turn opened their own studios and so the work of Pilates spread.  Today there are many flavours of Pilates each with its own lineage and different approach to teaching Joseph's original work.  At The Body Pilates, the equipment used is from Merrithew and the instructors are trained in Stotts Pilates.

About The GYROTONIC® Method

The Gyrotonic method is an original and unique movement method that addresses the entire body, opening energy pathways, stimulating the nervous system, increasing range of motion and creating functional strength.

Gyrotonic exercise sequences are composed of spiralling, circular movements which flow together seamlessly in rhythmic repetitions with corresponding breath patterns. Each movement flows into the next allowing the joints to move through a natural range of motion without jarring or compression.  These carefully crafted sequences create balance, efficiency, strength and flexibility.

Gyrotonic classes can be adapted to fit anyone’s ability from those recovering from injury or living with a disability to elite athletes.

About the GYROTONIC Tower

The Gyrotonic Pulley Tower Combination Unit is the result of over thirty years of research and development, and is the most widely used piece of Gyrotonic Equipment. The pulley tower provides smooth, even support and resistance via a unique, weighted pulley system. The adjustable bench and rotating handle unit can be customized to fit the individual proportions, and movement capacities of each user. The design of the equipment supports the full, and natural range of motion of the joints, allowing for three-dimensional, functional movement, and eliminating the sharp starts and stops where most injury occurs.
